The Water Oak tree (Quercus nigra) is a medium-sized deciduous tree, which reaches 60 to 80 feet in height, with rapid growth. The water oak does well in full sun, partial shade and grows best in acidic, drought-tolerant, sandy, well-drained, wet and clay soils. Shaped like a spatula, the leaves are broad and rounded at the top and narrow and wedged at the base. Acorns will mature in fall of the second year, starting in mid-September to October. Hardiness zone range is between 6 and 9.
