Bearing fruit in the fall, the American persimmon tree (Diospyros virginiana) is a fast-growing larger tree that’s hardy to USDA zones 4 through 9. The tree, native to North America, grows best in well-drained soil. You must have both the male and female plants to obtain fruit. Between three and six years of age, the tree will start producing fruit. On average, the persimmon tree will begin producing fruit after about six years. The fruit is pale orange with a red cheek, and is very constructive to bucks. Vitamins and minerals from the fruit are valuable to nursing fawns. This tree can tolerate temperatures down to -25° F.
